About

Professor Bonita Meyersfeld works in the areas of international law, gender justice, and business and human rights.

Bonita obtained her LLB (cum laude) from Wits and completed both her master’s degree and doctorate at Yale Law School. She has worked as a legal adviser in the House of Lords in the UK. From 2012 to 2017, she served as Director of the Centre for Applied Legal Studies at Wits.

Bonita has appeared before the International Criminal Court, the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and the High Court on matters relating to international law, gender-based violence, corporate accountability, and constitutional law.

Following the publication of her book Domestic Violence and International Law, Bonita founded Lawyers against Abuse, a pro bono law firm providing legal and psychosocial support to survivors of gender-based violence.

In 2018 she was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite (Knight of the National Order of Merit) by the French government in recognition of her work promoting gender justice.

Bonita has advised various UN bodies, organs of the AU, the Commonwealth, and national organs of state.
